El Jadida, which until the end of the 19th century was called Mazagan, is a historical and very attractive city which is just one hour far from Casablanca. Portuguese began occupying El Jadida in the year 1502 and they held the city for over 250 years as major trading station. The city was later relinquished by the Portuguese in 1769, thus it was taken back from the Moroccan Sultan. However, the years have been kind to the city in terms of preserving its colonial architecture, and this should thrill historians. With a whole day in this city, you will have an opportunity to submerge oneself into the past and explore such off beat places as the towering ramparts and the Portuguese citadel and indeed the cisterns below.
Beside its rich history the city has beautiful seashore view from the medina that will be interesting to explore for travelers who have an interest in historical and cultural peculiarities of Morocco. Depending on which aspect of travel is of interest: architecture, people, or leisure by the seashore, El Jadida is more or less all inclusive.

Furtheremore, you will then proceed to the Porte de la Mer, a city gate that was the entry and exit of the Portuguese ships an aspect that makes this a historical site with regards to the sea history of the city.
After that you will further have the possibility to discover the Citerne Portugaise which is a significantly large Portuguese water storage tank for fresh water supply to the city. Moreover, this cistern is one of the best-preserved elements of the city of El Jadida where the temperature is more manageable and the echoes of colonialist past can be heard within the stone walls of the vast cistern.
